Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator Implantation //

An implantable cardioverter defibrillator or ICD, is a specialised type of pacemaker that not only regulates the heart rate and regularity but can also deliver an electric shock to the heart if it where ever to go into a dangerous life threatening heart rhythm.

ICDs are generally recommended for in patients who have either survived a cardiac arrest in the past or in those who are at high risk of a cardiac arrest in the future due to the severity of their heart condition.

Implanting one of these devices is similar to having a pacemaker fitted.
