Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM) has been by NICE for the diagnosis of hypertension.  It is simply an automatic blood pressure machine that is timed to check and store your blood pressure during set intervals throughout a 24 hour period.  This allows for an accurate assessment of blood pressure and removes the risk of over treating patients with so called 'white coat hypertension'.  This is a common scenario whereby our blood pressure increases when we visit the doctor.

ABPM is also useful to assess the response of blood pressure to antihypertensive medications.
